TDIB: May 30 - Odell Jones Befuddles Philadelphia

Monday, May 30 - Odell Jones Befuddles Philadelphia

In a battle of NL East powerhouses, Pittsburgh crushes the Phillies 7-0 behind the pitching of Odell Jones (3-0, 1.98 ERA) who allows four hits and strikes out seven in his complete game win. Al Oliver (.302, 23 RBI) has three singles and a double, scoring twice and driving in two while Ken Macha (.257, 18 RBI) adds a double with his two singles for a three-hit day. The win is Jones' second consecutive shutout. A throwing error by Phillies catcher Tim McCarver (his 3rd) in the third inning accounts for four unearned runs.

In the second game of a doubleheader, San Francisco's George Thomasson (.283, 10 HR, 37 RBI) has five hits and drives in three runs, but the Giants fall to San Diego 10-7 as Doug Rader (.222, 12 RBI) goes 4-for-4 and Gene Tenace (.181, 6 HR, 21 RBI) delivers four runs batted in. Bill Almon scores three runs in the win and Dave Winfield (.286, 4 HR, 17 RBI) scores twice and drives in two more.

In game one, Bill Madlock (.332, 29 RBI) has three hits, Darrell Evans (.302, 21 RBI) drives in three runs and the Giants leave little doubt in the outcome as they win 8-2.

The Rangers winning streak ends at nine as Seattle's John Montague (4-3, 3.45 ERA) throws a three-hit shutout, striking out seven while leading the Mariners to a 4-0 victory at Arlington Stadium. Rookie RF Carlos Lopez (.233, 9 SB) cracks three singles and steals four bases. Rangers backup catcher Bill Fahey (.190) had a rough go of it as he goes hitless on the day, Seattle swipes seven bases off of him and his throwing error in the second inning accounted for one unearned run.

In game two of the evening doubleheader, Doyle Alexander (6-3, 3.11 ERA) of the Rangers returns the favor, blanking Seattle on five hits while Toby Harrah (.270, 31 RBI) hits RBI-doubles in the sixth and eighth innings to lead Texas to a 3-0 win. Roy Howell (.287) has three hits on the day, scoring twice on Harrah's doubles.

In the second game of an afternoon twinbill at Comiskey, Milwaukee's Ron Hodges (.284, 7 RBI) hits an RBI-double to tie the game at three with one out in the ninth inning off of Chicago's Lerrin LaGrow (3 BS) to send it into extra innings. Two innings later Bruce Dal Canton (0-1, 2.87 ERA) loads the bases without recording an out, giving up a Charlie Moore (14 RBI) sacrifice fly to give the Brewers the lead and the win, 4-3. Bill Castro (2-0, 1.29 ERA) throws two scoreless innings to get the win.

In the first game, Chicago's Ralph Garr (.343, hits three singles and drives in three, Wayne Nordhagen (.263) scores twice on his three base knocks and Jack Brohamer (.296, 2 RBI) scores three runs on a single and a double as the White Sox overcome four errors and withstand a four-run ninth inning from Milwaukee to win the game, 8-7.

Cleveland wins its fifth game in a row by beating the Angels 4-1 to move within one game of the Milwaukee Brewers for the AL East lead, but it comes at a cost as they lose George Hendrick (.295, 5 HR, 24 RBI) for the year due to a torn calf muscle. Since coming over from San Diego in a trade on May 1st, the Indians have won 19 of their 25 games. Hendrick scores two runs on two hits - including his 11th double of the season while Wayne Garland (7-3, 1.88 ERA) strikes out seven and allows seven hits in eight innings for his seventh win.

Boston gets three solo home runs from Butch Hobson (.229, 6 HR, 19 RBI), Jim Rice (.242,8 HR, 27 RBI) and George Scott (.243, 3 HR, 17 RBI) , but still fall to the Yankees 4-3 as Graig Nettles (.289, 6 HR, 16 RBI) equals their efforts with a three-run blast himself. Mickey Rivers (.251, 4 HR, 20 RBI) scores twice and hits his fourth home run of the year for the game-deciding run and breaking New York's seven game losing streak.

The days of Joe Frazier as New York Mets general manager continue to look bleaker as Montreal sends them to their eighth loss in a row, 4-1 at Shea Stadium. Kurt Bevacqua (.192, 2 HR, 14 RBI) drives in three runs and Dan Stanhouse (6-4, 4.06 ERA) allows five hits in eight innings. Nino Espinosa (4-5, 2.27 ERA) takes the loss, striking out eight in seven innings and giving up three earned runs.

Toronto rookie pitcher Jeff Byrd (1.55 ERA) runs his record to 6-0 as he throws a four-hitter with six strikeouts in a 6-0 shutout win over the Royals. John Scott (.324, 4 RBI) hits his first home run of the year as a part of his three hit day for the Blue Jays while U.L. Washington (.265) has two of Kansas City's four hits in the loss.

Bob Watson (.294, 35 RBI, 6 SB) delivers three singles and a double, Cesar Cedeno (.264, 30 SB) adds a double, two singles and scores twice and Ken Forsch (5-2. 1.51 ERA) blanks the Dodgers on two hits through eight innings as Houston wins 4-0 in the Astrodome. The speedy Astros take advantage of backup catcher Kevin Pasley behind the plate as they steal seven bases on the day - three by Cedeno.

Pat Zachry (8-3, 4.15 ERA) strikes out seven and allows just five hits over eight innings as Cincinnati get hits when they need them in defeating the Braves 4-0. Atlanta starter Buzz Capra (3-3, 5.72 ERA) gives up two hits in seven innings, but four walks help contribute to three earned runs and he suffers the loss.

I stressed the importance of this game to the team beforehand and they came through for me, beating the Toreadors with 15 hits and cutting our deficit to three games with four to play. Our saving grace during this chance is that the final three games for Rockledge is against the other division leader, Batavia. Hurley (.315, 11 RBI) really shined tonight with three key hits and Robert Adams (.304, 24 RBI), Dave Kramer (.259) and Paco Bruno (.236, 11 RBI) added a pair of hits each. And I can't say enough about our bullpen, who once again took the ball and ran with it - to the tune of another 3 1/3 scoreless innings.
