California's Gil Flores (.355, 1 HR, 8 RBI) has three hits, drives in four runs and scores twice as the Angles needed every bit of support it could get as they hold on to beat Toronto, 11-10. Flores hits an RBI-double and a three-run home run in the first three innings as California takes an early 8-2 lead, but the Blue Jays, led by three hits and three runs batted in from Al Woods (.299, 17 RBI) and three hits and two RBI each from Otto Velez (.270, 26 RBI) and Ron Fairly (.296, 28 RBI) would not give up, cutting the deficit to one before stranding the tying run on second at the end of the game. Rance Mulliniks (.294, 6 HR, 22 RBI) also hits a three-run blast for the Angles in the win. The 12th error of the year by Toronto 3B Hector Torres led to four unearned runs.

Chicago's Dennis Lamp (2-2, 1.91 ERA) holds the Pirates to five hits through 8 1/3 innings and hands Pittsburgh starter Jerry Reuss (5-1) his first loss of the year as the Cubs win 3-0. Jose Cardenal (.232, 1 HR, 16 RBI) hits a three-run home run off of Reuss in the fifth inning for the only scoring in the game.

Nelson Briles (4-5, 3.01 ERA) gives the Rangers the eighth straight win as he throws a five-hit complete game for a 7-1 victory over the Milwaukee. Claudell Washington (.287, 32 RBI) has three more singles and has seven in his last 10 at-bats. Briles loses the shutout in the ninth inning when Washington misplays a single by Don Money (.298) allowing Sixto Lezcano to score from second.

In a battle for the divison lead in the NL West, Cincinnati gets a key road win as Johnny Bench (.201, 28 RBI) drives in three to lead to Reds to a 5-4 win over Los Angeles. Up 5-1 in the eighth, Cincinnati had to withstand a late charge, led by a two-run home run by Bob Boone (.313, 4 HR, 22 RBI) - his fourth hit of the day - and a three hit performance by Reggie Smith (.284) to get the Dodgers to within one.

Reggie Jackson (.312, 31 RBI) hits his league leading 13th home run of the season, but the Yankees cannot come back from an early 4-1 hole despite three hits from Mickey Rivers (.251, 19 RBI) and fall to Chicago, 5-4. Oscar Gamble (.255, 5 HR, 19 RBI) hits a three-run blast that builds up the early cushion. The loss in the fifth in a row for New York, and eighth in their last ten games, dropping them into tie for fourth place in the AL East with Detroit, four games behind Milwaukee.

Detroit catcher Milt May (.257, 5 HR, 17 RBI) hits two home runs and Vern Ruhle (4-4, 3.13 ERA) needs just 98 pitches to shut down the Mariners on five hits as the Tigers come away with a 6-1 victory.

The slide of the Mets continues as they lose 10-4 to Philadelphia for their sixth loss in a row. Mike Schmidt (.289, 9 HR, 31 RBI) and Davey Johnson (.271, 3 HR, 17 RBI) each hit three-run home runs as part of their multi-hit days while Jerry Martin (.265, 6 RBI) has three hits of his own in the win. Schmidt, Johnson and Greg Luzinski (.294) also score two runs apiece.

Before the game, I received a phone call that Juan Carlos Garcia was on a train to West Palm Beach, our Single A affiliate - leaving me with just three starters to finish the season with and all of whom are exhausted. I queried my bullpen looking for any fresh arm and Brian Little (1.65 ERA) volunteered saying he was ready to go. As was he ever. We had him on a pitch count, so I couldn't let him stay in to finish the game, but he was dominant early on and able to get out of his own jams late - exactly was I was looking for. Ed Hanson (.318) paced the offense with three hits and scoring two runs while Paco Bruno (.217, 9 RBI) drives home three runs in a rare start.
