TDIB: May 26 - Dues Done For The Year

Thursday, May 26
Montreal may have lost starter Hal Dues (5.08 ERA) for the year to what initial reports say is a torn rotator cuff in the sixth inning of their game against the Cubs. The Expos would prevail however, as Larry Parrish (.255, 3 HR, 19 RBI) sends a Bruce Sutter (0-2, 1 BS, 4.09 ERA) fastball into the left field seats for a three-run ninth inning home run and a 6-5 Expos victory in front of just 8,705 at Wrigley Field. Steve Renko (2.66 ERA) pitches well for Chicago, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out five.

Steve Carlton (6-3, 2.57 ERA) scatters nine hits, but only allows one to cross the plate as he strikes out five Cardinals hitters in a 7-1 win over St. Louis. Mike Schmidt (.285, 28 RBI) scores three times and drives in two on two hits to pace the offense while the Phillies steal six bases off of Cardinals backup catcher Dave Rader. Two St. Louis errors account for four unearned runs for Cards starter Pete Falcone (2.91 ERA), who drops to 0-5 on the year.

White Sox starter Steve Stone (4.09 ERA) strikes out seven and allows one run over eight innings, but can only watch as Lerrin LaGrow (2-6, 2 BS, 3.07 ERA) gives up three consecutive two-out singles to Von Joshua (.217, 15 RBI), Robin Yount (.240) and Cecil Cooper (.280, 22 RBI) after SS Alan Bannister (3rd error) misplays a ground ball that would have ended the game, but instead gives the Brewers a 3-2 win.

Bob Knepper (4-1, 4.04 ERA) of the Giants allows just two hits, but gives up three runs as he walks four through eight innings. He gets the win however as San Francisco scratch together five runs of their own and pulls back within 1 1/2 games of Cincinnati with a 5-3 win over the Reds. Knepper also strikes out seven hitters, including Johnny Bench three times.

Once again, we could do nothing against the starter and it took superb pinch-hitting from our bench - this time Jorge Camacho (.222) and Jesus Lorenzo (.238, 5 RBI) keyed the ninth inning rally to send the game into extras. In the 10th, our little used players come through for us again as Robinson Diaz (.306) and William Turner (.240) hit one-out singles, then after a Camacho walk Lorenzo wins it with a sacrifice fly to deep right field. Sergio Diaz (.260) has four hits for the bad guys.
