
The Rangers win their seventh consecutive game and cut California's lead in the AL West to one game as they double up on Milwaukee, 6-3 at County Stadium. Claudell Washington (.278, 31 RBI) delivers four singles with a run batted in, Jimmy Sexton (.263) add three hits of his own and Toby Harrah (.272, 7 HR, 27 RBI) blasts a three-run home run to lead the Texas offense. Bert Blyleven (6-2, 2.80 ERA) goes the distance in the win, allowing five hits and three earned runs.

Cardinals pitcher John Denny (4-3, 3.01 ERA) strikes out 11 while throwing an eight-hit shutout in 5-0 blanking of Montreal. Leadoff hitter Lou Brock (.208, 11 RBI) has two hits and two stolen bases for St. Louis, giving him 878 in his 17-year career and just 14 behind Ty Cobb for second on the stolen base career list.

Mike Paxton of the Red Sox goes 10 1/3 innings allowing just four hits and one run - a homer to Freddie Patek (.248, 2 HR, 10 RBI) to lead off the game, but closer Bill Campbell (0-3, 5.40 ERA) manages only one out in relief as he gives up a triple to Dave Nelson (.111) and doubles to Buck Martinez (.571, 4 RBI) and Amos Otis (.245, 18 RBI) in a 5-1 loss to Kansas City. Rick Burleson (.257) has three hits in the loss, including his 14th double while Royals starter Andy Hassler (1.40 ERA) strikes out six while giving up six hits in eight innings for a no decision.

Philadelphia hits three solo home runs off of Mets starter Tom Seaver (3-5, 3.72 ERA) and Larry Christenson (3-4, 4.86 ERA) shuts down New York's offense, holding them to five hits through eight innings in a 4-1 Phillies win. Seaver goes the distance in the loss, striking out nine.

Pittsburgh sluggers Dave Parker (.309, 35 RBI) and Willie Stargell (.285, 22 RBI) each have three hits, including each hitting their ninth home runs of the year and driving in three runs respectively as the Pirates crush Chicago, 10-3. Parker also scores three times while starter Bruce Kison (5-3, 3.04 ERA) throws his second complete game of the year, giving up four hits and a three-run home run by Jerry Morales (.345, 3 HR, 13 RBI). The loss is the sixth straight defeat for the Cubbies.

Mark Fidrych (7-3, 3.21 ERA) gets his seventh win as Tom Veryzer (.169, 6 RBI) delivers a game-winning RBI single in the eighth inning to give the Tigers a 5-4 victory over Seattle. Jason Thompson (.258, 23 RBI) has another three hit game for Detroit and Dave Collins (.351) has three hits and steals two more bases to give him a Major League leading 32 on the year.

Toronto's super rookie Jim Clancy (7-0, 2.99 ERA) runs his undefeated streak to nine games as Gary Woods (.259, 21 RBI) has three hits with three runs batted in and Hector Torres (.250, 12 RBI) scores twice to go with his three hits and the Blue Jays beat up on California by a 10-3 score.

George Hendrick (.282, 20 RBI) has three hits with two doubles and drives in three while Johnny Grubb (.333, 11 RBI) scores three times on his three hits, including his first home run of the year in a 9-4 Cleveland win over the Athletics. The win marks the ninth victory in the last twelve games for the Tribe and moves them into third place in the AL East, just 3 1/2 games behind Milwaukee.

Another game, another last at-bat victory. After Steven Garland (3.60 ERA) walked Mark Hutchinson and hit Alfredo Aranda to start our half of the ninth, Robinson Diaz bunted both men over. Garland then walked Richard Adams on five pitches, loading the bases for Daron Hurley (.300, 9 RBI) who hits a game-winning, two-RBI single to keep the pressure on Rockledge for the division lead. Aside from Jeff Dionne (.270, 12 RBI) personally giving it to us, the Pirates also got three hits from Saikaku Wayanabe (.245).
