Chicago starter Steve Renko (1-0, 1.00 ERA) scatters eight hits and allows just one run in a complete game victory as the Cubs defeat Philadelphia, 6-1. Phillies starter Jim Kaat (0-1) fails to make it out of the fourth inning as he gives up six earned runs.

With two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning and the score tied at two against the Reds, Enos Cabell (.313) triples off of the wall in left-center and scores the winning run one batter later on a single by Cesar Cedeno (.278, 5 RBI) - his third of the game. Cedeno drives in all three of Houston's runs in the win.

Behind four hits from SS Freddie Patek (.500, 1 RBI) and a complete game seven-hitter from Andy Hassler (1-0, 1.00 ERA) , the Royals crush New York, 8-1. Hassler quiets the mighty Yankee lineup, giving up seven hits while striking out three.
