TDIB: May 24 - Bullpen Spoils Niekro's Effort

Tuesday, May 24
Atlanta's Phil Niekro (3.04 ERA) gives up just two hits and one run while striking out seven through nine innings, but is in the showers when Gary Sutherland (.193, 10 RBI) hits an RBI double in the bottom of the 13th inning off of Mike Marshall (2-2) to give San Diego a 2-1 win over the Braves. Niekro's only miscue was allowing a leadoff double to Jerry Turner in the second inning. Turner would move to third on a groundout, then score on a Bill Almon sacrifice fly.

Hits were scarce for Los Angeles as fireballer J.R. Richard (5-3, 3.15 ERA) gave up just three of them over eight innings while striking out eight Dodgers hitters in a 6-0 Houston victory. Jose Cruz (.250, 9 RBI, 24 SB) has three hits and steals three bases while Enos Cabell (.309, 15 RBI, 26 SB) drives in a pair of runs for the Astros in the win.

Dave Kingman (.258, 8 HR, 23 RBI) hits a two-run home run off of Pittsburgh's Jim Rooker (5-2, 2.76 ERA) in the top of the ninth to tie the game at two only to have pinch-hitter Mike Easler (.313, 2 RBI) hit a game winning single in the bottom of the frame to give the Pirates a 3-2 win over New York. Rooker hangs around for the complete game win, scattering seven hits and two runs while striking out four.

Cleveland closer Dave LaRoche (2-2, 3.72 ERA) blows his first save opportunity this season as pinch hitter Larry Cox (.256, 2 HR, 5 RBI) takes him deep with a two-run shot in the eighth to give the Mariners a 3-2 lead. Seattle would add an insurance run in the ninth an RBI-single by Dave Collins (.352,17 RBI) for the 4-2 victory. Tribe starter Pat Dobson (4.50 ERA) allows just three hits through seven innings before leaving with a knee injury while Dick Pole (2-6, 4.65 ERA) gives up two unearned runs through eight innings to get the win.

Fergie Jenkins (4-4, 3.76 ERA) and Catfish Hunter (1-3, 4.01 ERA) have a pitchers duel through eight innings, but Jim Rice (.252, 6 HR, 23 RBI) greets Hunter in the top of the ninth with a solo home run to give the Red Sox a 3-2 victory. Jenkins goes eight innings, giving up two runs (one earned) and six hits to get the win, while Catfish goes the distance in the loss, allowing five hits and three earned runs.
