Seattle's Byron McLaughlin (2-3, 3.19 ERA) helps break the Mariners six-game losing streak by holding New York to just one run on two hits through eight innings and gaining a 2-1 victory. Dock Ellis (4-2, 2.38 ERA) goes the distance in the loss, giving up five hits while striking out five.
Rudy May (3.83 ERA) of the Orioles throws eight innings of shutout baseball but fails to gain a decision as California scores twice in the bottom of the ninth off closer Tippy Martinez (0-2, 3 BS, 14.21 ERA) and gets a 2-1 win over Baltimore. After giving up consecutive singles to Rusty Torres (.250) and Ron Jackson (.241) to open the inning, Martinez walks Thad Bosley to loaded the bases - then uncorks a wild pitch to tie the game. One sacrifice fly by Jerry Remy (10 RBI) later, Baltimore's six-game winning streak comes to an end. Gary Ross (6-1, 3.10 ERA) throws his fifth complete game in seven starts to get the win.
New York 2B Felix Millan (.255, 1 HR, 12 RBI) has three hits and drives in three more while Bud Harrelson (.212, 11 RBI) and Jerry Grote (.222) adds three hits apiece to lead the Mets past San Diego, 8-2. Tom Seaver (3-2, 2.78 ERA) goes eight innings, giving up five hits and one earned run while striking out nine Padres for the win. The loss snaps San Diego's six-game winning streak.
Jerry Reuss (3-0, 2.89 ERA) runs his unbeaten streak to seven games and Kent Tekulve (0.53 ERA) saves his 10th game in 10 chances as Pittsburgh gains a 2-1 win over the Braves at Three Rivers Stadium. Reuss strikes out seven in eight innings, scattering eight hits and one earned run while Atlanta starter Dick Ruthven (1-3, 3.52 ERA) pitches his second complete game of the year, allowing six hits and two runs in the loss. 1B Tom Paciorek (.273) goes 3-for-3 and scores the Braves' lone run.
