Dick Ruthven (3-3, 3.06 ERA) was a one man show tonight as he provids the defense AND the offense to defeat the Padres. Not only did the Braves starter shut out San Diego on three hits, he also drives in three runs himself on three singles to lead the offense to a 7-0 victory. Ruthven strikes out eight in his third complete game of the season and raises his batting average to a respectable .261.
While Moose Haas (2-6, 3.22 ERA) holds the Baltimore lineup to four hits and one run through eight innings, Cecil Cooper (.278, 3 HR, 19 RBI) was handling the offensive duties two home runs and a single, driving in five runs and scoring three times as Milwaukee hands the Orioles a 9-1 loss. Robin Yount (.239, 19 RBI) collects two doubles and a single in the win while Brewers runners steal seven bases off of Baltimore catcher Darrell Porter.
Pittsburgh's Jerry Reuss (2.44 ERA) moves to 5-0 as he keeps the Mets to five hits while striking out eight in eight innings and the Pirates beat New York by a 3-1 score. Mets starter Jon Matlack (3.69 ERA) pitches well - striking out nine hitters while giving up two earned runs on six hits - but fails to pick up a win and falls to 0-7 on the season.
Reggie Jackson (.327, 29 RBI) hits his league leading 11th home run of the season and the Yankees move into second place in the AL East with a 4-2 win over Boston.
