TDIB: May 22 - Fairly's 2 HR Not Enough

Sunday, May 22
Toronto's Ron Fairly (.283, 8 HR, 25 RBI) hits two home runs, scores three times and drives in four as the Blue Jays force Bert Blyleven out after just four innings, but an RBI-single by Bill Fahey (.217, 7 RBI) scores Toby Harrah in the bottom of the ninth to give Texas a 8-7 win. Harrah hits a one-out single, moves to second on a wild pickoff throw by Mike Willis (2-1, 4.50 ERA) and then promptly steals third. Claudell Washington (.272, 29 RBI) drives in three runners and scores twice on two hits to lead the Rangers.

Pirates hitters have nothing for Los Angeles starter Doug Rau (7-2, 3.41 ERA) as he holds them to four hits over eight innings while striking out five and the Dodgers beat Pittsburgh, 2-0. Bruce Kison (4-3, 3.04 ERA) was solid for the Pirates, going 7 2/3 innings, striking five while allowing six hits and both LA runs. Charlie Hough (0.00 ERA) pitches a scoreless ninth for his eighth save and runs his scoreless innings streak to 14.

Seattle leadoff hitter Dave Collins (.354) goes 4-for-4 and Byron McLaughlin (4-3, 2.44 ERA) blanks the Oakland lineup on six hits through eight innings as the Mariners score a 2-0 shutout in the Oakland Coliseum.

In game one of a doubleheader with the Yankees, Rich Dauer (.237, 2 HR, 11 RBI) hits a solo home run to lead of the 11th inning to give the Orioles a 6-5 victory. Larry Harlow (.241) delivers three hits and Eddie Murray (.336, 28 RBI) hits a single in the seventh to extend his hitting streak to 20 games - which would end in game two as New York's Ron Guidry (7-1, 2.25 ERA) goes 5 1/3 innings on three days rest for the 2-0 win. Baltimore would only manage three hits off of Guidry and four relievers. Mike Flanagan (4-4, 4.21 ERA) pitches well for the Orioles despite going on three days rest himself, giving up four hits and a run in 6 1/3 innings.

Oscar Gamble (.243, 15 RBI) hits a bases-loaded double off of Detroit starter Mark Fidrych (6-3, 3.08 ERA) in the bottom of the 11th inning to lead the White Sox to a 3-2 win over the Tigers. Jason Thompson (.252) has three singles and Fidrych scatters seven hits across 9 1/3 in the loss, throwing 143 pitches. When asked why he kept Fidrych in the game, manager Ralph Houk states "...he was on a 150-pitch count."

A Steve Ontiveros (his 2nd) error in the seventh inning costs the Cubs two unearned runs and a win as Atlanta comes away with a 4-2 victory. The Braves manage just four hits in the game off of loser Brian Bonham (3-3).

Randy Elliott (.222, 1 HR, 2 RBI) hits a solo home run in the ninth off of Cardinals closer Clay Carroll (1 BS, 1.93 ERA) to tie the game, then Marc Hill (.263), Terry Whitfield (.263, 1 HR, 4 RBI) and Bill Madlock (.317, 26 RBI) string together three straight singles in top of the 11th inning to plate the winning run and give the Giants a 5-4 triumph. Gary Templeton (.295) leads the Cardinals offense with three hits in the losing effort.

Philadelphia overcomes three Craig Robinson errors (fourth total) when Garry Maddox (.186) triples to open the 10th inning and scores two batters later on the fourth hit of the game for Greg Luzinski (.281, 24 RBI) to give the Phillies a 4-3 comeback win over Houston.

Gary Nolan (3-3, 3.91 ERA) gives up two earned runs on six hits through eight innings as Cincinnati sweeps the a doubleheader with the Mets. The two wins stretched the Reds lead in the NL West to one full game as both San Francisco and Los Angeles win their games.
