TDIB: June 9 - Bumbry Ends Marathon Game

As the clocks reached midnight on the East Coast, many of the 21,833 in attendance at Fenway Park were still in their seats for the 16th inning.

Unfortunately, they didn't leave happy.

Al Bumbry (.274, 4 HR, 15 RBI) hits his second home run of the game off of Red Sox reliever Jim Willoughby (0-1, 2.08 ERA) in the top of the inning to give Baltimore a 7-6 road victory in a game that lasted nearly five hours.

"Ask me about this game tomorrow. I'm too damn tired right now." Bumbry said afterward.

The Orioles looked to be on their way to a win as Bumbry's three-run shot in the sixth gave them a 6-3 lead - a lead they would take into the eighth inning. However, Boston would score a run in the inning on a Carlton Fisk (.220, 18 RBI) RBI-single and then take advantage of errors by Elliott Maddox (his sixth) and Rich Dauer (seventh) to score a pair of runs in the ninth to tie the game.

"Our defense let us down tonight." Orioles manager Earl Weaver said bitterly. "There is a reason we lead the American League in errors - we aren't doing the basic fundamentals it takes to be successful. Until we get our heads out of our rear ends and realize that, we won't be where we need to be."

The win puts Baltimore just a half game behind the Red Sox to emerge from the cellar of the AL East - and more importantly keeping Weaver employed.

"If we play like we are capable, the wins will take of themselves." third baseman Doug DeCinces said. "Execution is the key - we are a talented enough team to be competing for the pennant. I mean, look at Cleveland - those guys are leading the division?!?"

TDIB: April 27 - Hello Mr. Robinson

Pittsburgh wins its sixth consecutive game in memorable fashion as Bill Robinson (.323, 2 HR, 8 RBI) hits a three-run home run off of Phillies closer Gene Garber for a 7-6 victory. It is the second game in a row a home run by Robinson led the way to Pirates win. Yesterday it was a two-run home that gave Pittsburgh a lead they would never relinquish - today his home run completed a two-game sweep of one of their closest competitors in the NL East.

Even though Robinson has been able to come through for the team, the 33-year old veteran takes the moment in style. He is thankful for his good fortune, but realizes that the tide can turn at any moment.

"The Gods of Baseball are shining down on me this week. I'm just hoping the other shoe doesn't fall and I go hitless during the next two months. My dog could die, my wife could leave me, but I couldn't live if I went 0-for-May."

Omar Moreno (.224, 6 RBI) and Willie Stargell (.333, 10 RBI) each have three hits in the win with Moreno coming a home run short of hitting for the cycle. The Pirates accumulate six doubles as a team and eight extra-base hits overall.

"We are hitting our stride. We know how good this team is and we are performing at that peak level." Stargell said to reporters afterward. "Right now, we feel that there isn't a team in the league that we cannot beat."

Mike Schmidt (.321, 2 HR, 7 RBI) almost single-handedly keeps Philadelphia in the game as he scores two runs while driving in two more as he doubles and hits his second home run of the year. The loss drops the Phillies seven games back of Pittsburgh.

"Sure this loss hurts. Every loss hurts." Schmidt said. "If you ever get to the point that you stop caring about losing - well, you need quit playing"

TDIB: April 26 - Cubs Fall in Extras

The Cubs hit four home runs, but can not stop the St. Louis hit parade as the Cards pound out 20, the game-clincher being a home run by Keith Hernandez (.203, 1 HR, 8 RBI, 1 SB) in the 11th inning - the only home run in the game - to lead St. Louis to a 9-7 victory.

Hernandez has three singles to go along with the home run, scores three runs and has three runs batted in on the day, but as he said after the game, he's happy to be hitting again.

"It seems like I have been in a slump for the entire month, It bothers me when everyone else is hitting the ball and doing their part and I was hitting under .200. Hopefully today will turn things around for me - those slump busters are getting pretty scary looking."

Gary Templeton (.267, 8 SB), Ted Simmons (.288, 10 RBI, 1 SB) and Buddy Bell (.258, 4 RBI) all have three hits with Simmons and Bell each driving in a pair and Templeton, Simmons and Bake McBride (.348, 7 RBI, 10 SB) scoring twice.

Chicago RF Bobby Mercer (.298, 2 HR, 6 RBI) drives in three runs and Steve Ontiveros (.333, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 2 SB) goes a perfect 4-for-4, including a game tying home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to send the game into extra innings.

"We did everything but when the game." Ontiveros said. "We just made the wrong mistakes at the wrong time. We had the opportunities to win it, but things didn't go our way tonight."
