Bruce Bochte pounded Toronto pitching all day long, but he needed a little help in the bottom of the ninth inning for the Angels to come away with the win. After the Blue Jays tied the score in the top of the inning on the seventh home run from catcher
Alan Ashby (.285, 23 RBI), Bochte led off the inning hitting his second double of the day - this one off of Toronto reliever
Jerry Garvin.
"It was a slider that didn't slide." Bochte said as he sat by his locker.
"I thought I got all of it, but just missed it. Luckily, there was someone hitting behind me that I was happy to see back."That someone was the returning
Ike Hampton (.378, 7 HR, 17 RBI) who had missed the last 10 games with a strained thigh muscle. Bochte and Hampton hit back-to-back home runs earlier in the third inning to erase a three run deficit and tie the game and looked to combine again to end the game.
"I just wanted to drive the ball enough to get BB home." Hampton said post game.
What he did was take a 2-2 Garvin fastball and deposit it into the left field seats sending the 21,723 in attendance into a frenzy. It could be the shot in the arm the California club needs as in the 10 games Hampton missed, the Angles managed just four wins.
Perhaps Bochte summed it up best.
