The powerful Texas Rangers team was held in check today as Red Sox rookie Don Aase (3-1, 1.77 ERA) manages to hold them to seven hits - all singles - while striking out three in a complete game 5-0 victory over Nelson Briles (4-6). Fred Lynn (.268, 20 RBI) hits his ninth home run of the year and 37-year old Carl Yastrzemski (.327, 24 RBI) scores twice and drives in another with a triple, the 51st of his career. Lynn's home run was the 50th for Boston this season, leading all of baseball.
"With the lineup we have, one of is bound to get some good pitches to swing at - they can't walk us all." Lynn said after the game. "We just haven't been coming through like we should. We are much better hitters than our averages or our record indicates."
Mike Hargrove (.267) has three of the seven Texas hits in the loss.

Led by Dan Meyer (.265, 19 RBI), Seattle wins a slugfest against the Athletics, 12-6 at the Kingdome. Meyer singles, doubles and hits his third home run of the season - scoring twice and driving in four runs while Joe Lis (.250, 14 RBI) and Julio Cruz (.228, 14 RBI) have two RBI apiece. Oakland hits three two-run home runs off of starter Dick Pole (4.80 ERA), but cannot match the timely Mariners hitting as they score five of their 12 runs with two outs - most of which in the seven-run seventh inning. Newly resigned Doc Medich (5-5) takes the loss for the A's.

The Mets win their third straight as Joe Torre (.270, 5 RBI) has a four-hit day - including a double and his first home run of the year - scoring two runs and driving in two more as New York clips Montreal by a 5-3 score. Pepe Frias (.455, 1 RBI) has three singles for Montreal in the loss and starter Dan Warthen drops to 0-6 as he fails to get the seventh inning for fifth time in seven games.

Bob Watson (.301, 40 RBI) drives in all four Houston runs as the Astros win their eighth consecutive game and move into a tie with San Francisco for second place in the NL West with a 4-2 victory over the Reds at Riverfront Stadium. Astros starter Tom Dixon (2-2, 3.19 ERA) goes seven strong innings, allowing five hits and one earned run to get the win while Cesar Cedeno (32 SB) scores two runs and has two stolen bases.

| This off day could not have come at a better time for us to get rested up. We jumped out to a 7-2 lead after four innings and was able to cruise to a nice, easy victory - even if the game ended with the bases full of Cubs baserunners. Adams (.307, 25 RBI) and his three singles was a key, as was Ed Hansen (.321, 11 RBI) and Dave Kramer (.264, 9 RBI), who each drove in two runs. Newton (3.21 ERA) was solid, giving up eight hits in seven innings, but six walks contributed to a very high pitch count - which led to me putting in some less that stellar relievers (Bruce Oliver & Tim Taylor) - which led to the game being a tad bit closer than it needed to be. The much better news is that Rockledge lost yet again - so we are now just one game out with two games yet to play. Keep your fingers crossed. |
