TWIB: Spring Training Edition

With Mel Allen
Preseason Edition

TWIB Notes

Mar 7 - The Braves file suit against Commissioner Kuhn, challenging the severity of the penalty for tampering charges.

Mar 15 - The Pirates trade outfielders Tony Armas (.333, 1 RBI in 6 AB), OF Mitchell Page and four pitchers, including Rick Langford (0-1, 6.26 ERA in 23 IP), to the A's for 2B Phil Garner (.261, 8 HR, 74 RBI), IF Tommy Helms (.276, 1 HR, 13 RBI in 87 AB) and P Chris Batton.

Mar 17 - Federal Judge Frank McGarr rules in favor of Commissioner Kuhn, saying that the Kuhn acted within his authority in voiding the 1976 player sales engineered by A's owner Charlie Finley.

Mar 21 - Mark Fidrych (19-9, 2.34 ERA), the 1976 Rookie of the Year, rips the cartilage in his left knee and is scheduled to undergo surgery in ten days.

Mar 25 - In a spectacular display, the comet affectionately called "Babe" by it's many supporters, streaks through the night sky - much closer to the earth than any comet has come before. The resulting magnetic disturbance knocks out power and disrupts controllers across North America.

Mar 26 - The Athletics trade former All-Star OF Claudell Washington (.257, 5 HR, 53 RBI, 37 SB) to the Rangers for P Jim Umbarger (10-12, 3.15 ERA), infielder Rodney Scott (.400 in 10 AB) and cash.

The White Sox sufferes a minor blow as starting pitcher Wilbur Wood will miss two weeks due to a strained back muscle suffered in a game against the Mariners. Although team officials are being careful with the injury, early reports say Wood should not miss any starts.

Mar 28 - The Rangers Len Randle, angry for having been benched during spring training, attacks 50-year old manager Frank Lucchesi, sending him to the hospital with a shattered cheekbone. Lucchesi helped precipitate the incident by calling the good-natured Randle "a punk."

The Reds swap Joel Youngblood (.193, 1 RBI in 57 AB) to the Cardinals for P Bill Caudill. Tomorrow they'll send Pat Darcy (2-3, 2 Sv, 6.23 ERA in 39 IP) to the Cards for Mike Caldwell (1-7, 2 SV, 4.86 ERA). Darcy will retire before the season starts.

Mar 29
Len Randle receives more bad news as it was announced today that he became the first player to become suspended for violation of the league's new Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. Although Randle was unavailable for comment, the Rangers plan on following through with the league's mandated 10-game suspension.

TWIB:April 3 - April 9

With Mel Allen
Vol. I, Issue I
Sunday, April 3 - Saturday, April 9, 1977

TWIB Notes

Tuesday, April 5
The Chicago White Sox trades SS Bucky Dent (.246, 2 HR, 52 RBI in 1976) to the New York Yankees for OF Oscar Gamble (.232, 17 HR, 57 RBI in 1976), pitchers LaMarr Hoyt and Bob Polinsky and an estimated $200,000.

Wednesday, April 6 - Rudi Hits First 1977 Long Ball
California designated hitter Joe Rudi (1.000, 1 HR, 1 RBI) steals two bases and scores four runs while going 3-for-3, including the first home run of the 1977 season while Don Baylor (.500, 3 RBI) drives in three as the Angels beat Seattle 10-4. Julio Cruz has three hits in the loss.

Cincinnati pitcher Fred Norman (1-0, 0.00 ERA) gives up five hits in seven innings while striking out four Padres hitters in the Reds 2-0 shutout win over San Diego. Padres starter Randy Jones (0-1, 2.25 ERA) went the distance in the loss, scattering six hits.

Thursday, April 7 - Blue Jays Win In Regular Season Debut
Toronto right fielder Otto Velez (.750, 1 HR, 2 RBI) hits a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie and give the Blue Jays a win over Chicago in their very first major league game. For the record books, Dave Lemanczyk (1-0, 3.38 ERA) gets the first win in club history, Pete Vukovich (1 SV) records the first save and White Sox second baseman Jorge Orta (.500, 1 HR, 2 RBI) hits the first home run in Exhibition Stadium.

Ed Figueroa (1-0, 1.13 ERA) throws eight innings of four hit baseball in a 4-1 win in the season opener at Yankee Stadium over the Brewers. Catcher Thurman Munson (1.000) goes 3-for-3 and Reggie Jackson (.333, 1 HR, 3 RBI) hits his first home run as a Yankee. The first four hitters have all of the Yankees six hits.

Jack Clark (.250, 1 HR, 4 RBI) hits a three-run home run off of Doug Rau (0-1, 16.20 ERA) while Bill Madlock (.750) and Darrell Evans (.600, 1 HR, 1 RBI) each have three hits as San Francisco pounds out 16 hits in a 9-3 win over the Dodgers.

Cubs CF Greg Gross (.500, 1 RBI) sends a one-out single to left field off of Mets reliever Bob Apodaca (0-1, 6.75 ERA) in the bottom of the 12th inning to score Brian Downing from second base to give Chicago a 4-3 win.

Gaylord Perry (1-0, 1.13 ERA) gives up 11 hits, but only lets in one run as he outduels Jim Palmer (0-1, 2.08 ERA) as the Rangers beat Baltimore, 2-1. Texas CF Juan Beniquez (.333) steals four bases off of Orioles catcher Rick Dempsey in five attempts.

Not really sure what Cleveland gained at all here. Trading someone who has played 150-plus games for the last two seasons for someone who will likely not even start has me really scratching my head. Dugout issues? Salary dump? The only one who knows is the front office in Cleveland. 'Beltin' Bill Melton will take over the starting 3B position vacated by Bell while Buddy becomes the Cardinals new starting third baseman forcing Ken Reitz into a utility infielder role.

Edge: St. Louis got the better end of this one by far.

Cleveland gets:
2B Mike Tyson (27) - $60,000 / 1
_ STL: 76 G / 245 AB / 70 H / 3 HR / 28 RBI / 3 SB / .286 AVG / .326 OBP / .455 SLG (in 1976)

Friday, April 8 - Royals Trade Leonard to Tigers
In a move that has left Kansas City fans dumbfounded, the Royals traded popular starting pitcher and 17-game winner Dennis Leonard and AA pitcher Fred Poulin to Motown in exchange for RF Bob Molinaro and AA pitcher Jesus Flores. While the Tigers were desperate for starting pitching, scoring a top end pitcher like Leonard for a little used outfielder is a steal. From my sources, Kansas City was not going to be able to resign Leonard for next year, but pulling the trigger this early seems questionable. Leonard will take over the #1 spot in the Detroit rotation, as the Tigers sent Fernando Arroyo down to Evansville to make room. The Tigers also called up Mickey Stanley to keep the spot warm where Molinaro used to sit on the bench. In the Royals camp, Molinaro will become the new starting right fielder and as a result, Al Cowens is expected to be placed on waivers. Doug Bird makes the move to the rotation and George Throop was brought up from Omaha to fill the remaining roster hole.

EDGE: Detroit gets the starter they desperatly needed and the contract that Kansas City didn't.
Detroit gets:
SP Dennis Leonard (25) - $269,790 / 1
_ KC: 35 G / 17-10 / 259 IP / 101 ER / 70 BB / 150 K / 3.51 ERA / .251 OAVG / 16 CG (in 1976)

California LF Don Baylor (.500, 1 HR, 9 RBI) hits a grand slam in the top of the ninth inning off of Mariners closer Enrique Romo (0-1, 108.11 ERA) to give the Angels a 6-3 victory over Seattle. Bruce Bochte (.400) collects three hits and 3B Ron Jackson (.500, 1 HR, 3 RBI) drives in two with his first home run of the year for the Angels. Ruppert Jones (.417, 2 RBI) goes 3-for-3 in a losing effort for the Mariners.

George Hendrick (.500) and Bobby Valentine (1.000, 1 RBI) each have three hits for the Padres but it still would not be enough as Cincinnati scores five times in the eighth inning sparked by doubles by pinch hitters Steve Henderson (.750, 1 RBI) and Bob Bailey (.500, 2 RBI) to give the Reds a 10-6 win.

While he didn't have his best stuff, Astros starter J.R. Richard (1-0, 3.38 ERA) had enough to defeat Phil Niekro (0-1, 5.63 ERA) and the Braves 5-3 in the Astrodome. Richard went eight innings giving up just four hits while striking out nine.

San Diego's search for a GM ends when the Board of Directors announce 51-year old Emory McCord will fill the position. Sources say the contract runs through the 1979 season with a salary of around $100,000.

Contract Signings
- MR Tom Walker signs a 1-year free agent contract worth a total of $59,885.
------------ Optioned MR Roy Lee Jackson to Triple A Tidewater.

- Optioned SP Fernando Arroyo to Triple A Evansville.
------------ Recalled RF Mickey Stanley from Triple A Evansville.
- SS Tim Foli was designated for assignment and placed on irrevocable waivers.
------------ Purchased the contract of 3B Kurt Bevacqua from Triple A Denver.

Saturday, April 9
Bert Blyleven (1-0, 0.00 ERA) kept Baltimore's bats quiet as he allowed just four hits while striking out eight in the Rangers 5-0 win. Texas only musters seven hits, but five of those occur in the five-run fourth inning to provide the only scoring. Rudy May (0-1, 5.00 ERA) goes the distance in the loss for the Orioles.

Steve Carlton (1-0, 0.00 ERA) tosses a four-hitter and Greg Luzinski (.500, 3 RBI) drives in three as Philadelphia crushes the Expos 8-0. Carlton strikes out seven while walking just one on the win.

Toronto 1B Doug Alt (.556, 1 HR, 1 RBI) collects five hits in five at-bats, but it is the heroics of defensive replacment Dave McKay (1.000, 1 RBI) , who hits a one-out double in the bottom of the ninth to score pinch runner John Scott and give the Blue Jays an amazing 6-5 win over Chicago. Alt scores four times and CF Gary Woods (.750, 2 RBI) adds three hits and two RBI. White Sox LF Ralph Garr (.556, 2 RBI) has four hits - including two doubles - in the loss.

Behind 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning, New York's Graig Nettles (.286, 1 HR, 3 RBI) hits a three-run drive to right off of Jim Slaton to give the Yankees a 6-4 victory over Milwaukee. Reggie Jackson (.571, 2 HR, 4 RBI) has three hits for New York, including his second homer in as many games and Don Money (.500, 2 RBI) has three as well for the Brew Crew.

Pittsburgh LF Al Oliver (.444, 1 HR, 4 RBI) has three hits and three RBI on the day, but none as important as his walk off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning off of Cardinals closer Al Hrabosky to give the Pirates a 4-3 triumph over St. Louis.

Braves CF Rowland Office (.429, 2 RBI) drives in two with three hits and Andy Messersmith (1-0, 1.00 ERA) throws a complete game four-hitter as Atlanta crushes the Astros 9-1.

After coming in to pinch run in the eighth inning, Rob Wilfong (1.000, 1 HR, 3 RBI) sends a Dave Giusti fastball over the right field wall to turn a 1-1 tie ballgame into a 4-1 Twins win. Oakland only manages five hits in the game, with DH Jim Tyrone (1.000) having three of those.

The Dodgers score twice in the bottom of the ninth on a single by Steve Garvey (.250, 2 RBI) to tie the game, then win the game one inning later with three consecutive hits off reliever Gary Lavelle (0-1, 1 BS, 3.00 ERA) for a 4-3 victory over the Giants.

TWIB: May 15 - May 21

With Mel Allen
Vol. I, Issue VII
Sunday, May 15 - Saturday, May 21, 1977

TWIB Notes

Sunday, May 15

Mets starter Tom Seaver (3-4, 3.95 ERA) allows just three hits in a 9-1 complete game win over the Dodgers. The only run the Dodgers scored was unearned due to an error by 3B Roy Staiger (3rd error) in the fourth inning. Dave Kingman (.239, 6 HR, 18 RBI) hit a bases loaded triple, a three-run home run and came within a double of hitting the cycle in accumulating six RBI for the day. Mets LF Steve Henderson (.215, 12 RBI) also had three hits and scored two runs in the winning effort.

The Indians score a run in the top of the ninth inning off White Sox starter Ken Kravec (3-5, 2.97 ERA) with singles from Rico Carty (.288), Bill Melton (.250) and Larvell Blanks (.300) to win the game 3-2. Jim Bibby (3-5, 5.20 ERA) gives up four hits in eight innings to get the win and Jim Kern (4.15 ERA) picks up his seventh save. Carty would score all three Indians runs.

Errors by 2B Manny Trillo (3rd error), 3B Dave Rosello (1st) and LF Greg Gross (3rd) lead to four unearned runs in the Cubs 8-5 loss to Montreal. Ellis Valentine (.256) has three hits and Gary Carter adds three RBI and his seveth home run of the year for the Expos. Carter (.233, 9 HR, 22 RBI) would go on to blast two more homers in the double-header nightcap as the Expos swept both games with the Cubs with the 12-2 win.

St. Louis pitchers hold the Braves to one hit, a single by Cito Gaston (.211), but lose the game 6-1 when Atlanta scores five unearned runs in the fifth inning from two errors by 3B Ken Oberkfell (his first 2 of the year), combined with three walks from reliever John D'Acquisto (2-1, 1 BS, 5.19 ERA). For their part, Braves pitchers Eddie Solomon (2-2, 4.43 ERA) and Mike Marshall (2.70 ERA) held the Cardinals to just two Bake McBride (.372) doubles the entire game.

Bernie Carbo (.293, 6 HR, 13 RBI) hits two solo home runs against Seattle starter Stan Thomas (2-6, 4.50 ERA), but it was an eighth inning solo blast by Carl Yastrzemski (.288, 8 HR, 25 RBI) off of Thomas that gives the Red Sox a 4-3 win. The Mariners load the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but Jim Rice catches a Dave Collins fly ball and right and nails Julio Cruz at the plate trying to tag up and score.

Injuries
- MR Rick Jones is exected to miss about 1-2 weeks with a damaged meniscus (knee).

Contract Signings
- RF Ken Henderson signed a 1-year extension worth a total of $97,000.

Monday, May 16
Cleveland loses LF Johnny Grubb (.328,4 HR,24 RBI) for 1-2 weeks after spraining his ankle in a 6-1 win over the Twins. Originally thought to be broken, doctors later diagnosed Grubb with a severe sprain that will take a few weeks to heal. John Lowenstein will be taking Grubb's place in left field. In the game, Rod Carew (.367) went 4-for-4 with two doubles for the Twins, but little else went Minnesota's way as Wayne Garland (3-3, 4.41 ERA) went the distance while giving up ten hits and striking out five.

The Yankees score seven runs in the top of the tenth to beat Oakland 9-2 - not having an extra-base hit the enitre game. Four of the runs were unearned as 3B Wayne Gross (his 6th error) and C Jeff Newman (2nd) both committed crucial errors to keep the inning alive and reliever Dave Giusti (2-3, 4.64 ERA) added to the mess by walking two batters. Lou Pinella (.234) was a perfect 3-for-3 and reserve 3B Fernando Gonzalez (.237) delievered three hits of his own for the Yankees, giving Sparky Lyle (2-1, 1.74) the win in relief.

The Orioles commit four errors in losing to Seattle 8-1, dropping the record of Jim Palmer (3.66 ERA) to 3-5 and giving Glenn Abbott (1-5, 5.94 ERA) his first win of the season. Palmer (1st error), Ken Singleton (1), Pat Kelly (1) and Eddie Murray (3) committed the errors. Abbott gives up just four hits in eight innings, giving up his only run on a Kelly (19 RBI) sacrifice fly after a Kiko Garcia (.232) triple in the third inning.

Steve Renko (7.02 ERA) gives up three home runs while falling to 0-3 in the Cubs 5-2 loss to San Diego. Two of the home runs were hit by Padres C Gene Tenace (.284, 3 HR, 21 RBI), who also scored three of San Diego's five runs.

Injuries
- LF Johnny Grubb is exected to miss about 1-2 weeks with a sprained ankle.

Tuesday, May 17
The Cubs will be without cleanup hitter Steve Ontiveros (.262, 2 HR, 20 RBI) for 3-4 weeks after he was plunked in the face with a Bob Shirley changeup in the third inning in the Cubs 4-2 loss to San Diego. The pitch only left Ontiveros with a deep bruise on his cheekbone and doctors predicted that a pitch any harder would have fractured the bone and put him on the shelf for the rest of the year.

Bill Lee (2-2, 4.85 ERA) of the Red Sox holds the Angels to four hits and leads Boston to a 2-0 win over California. Angel pitcher Don Hood (2-5, 3.46 ERA) only gives up three hits in seven innings, but two were solo home runs by Carlton Fisk (.295, 6 HR, 24 RBI) and George Scott (.266, 5 HR, 25 RBI).

The Orioles score one run in the top of the 11th on a Kiko Garcia (.238, 11 RBI) double off of Dave Pagen that brings home Lee May and gives Baltimore an 8-7 win over the Mariners. Ken Singleton (.367, 7 HR, 22 RBI) is the star for Baltimore, going a perfect 5-for-5, scoring three runs, four RBI and two home runs, his second being a three-run blast to left field that tied the score and sent the game into extra innings. Baltimore loses starter Mike Flanagan (4-1, 2.49 ERA) after the first inning to a strained back muscle and is listed as day-to-day.

Buddy Bell (.275, 5 HR, 21 RBI) hits two home runs and Bobby Grich (.216, 2 HR, 6 RBI) adds another, but Cleveland still falls to the Twins 6-5 when Lyman Bostock (.285, 22 RBI) doubles home Rod Carew in the bottom off the 12th off Lary Anderson (1-1, 2.61 ERA). Bell's two-run shot in the top of the ninth inning, ties the game up at five and sends the game into extra innings. Carew collects three more hits for Minnesota and is now hitting .376 for the year.

Greg Luzinski (.256, 27 RBI) hits his 10th home run of the year in the bottom of the 11th inning off Stan Wall (0-1, 2.25 ERA) to give the Phillies a 7-6 win over the Dodgers. Two innings prior, LA's John Hale (.100, 1 HR, 1 RBI) hits a pinch hit home run to tie the game and force the game into extra frames. Together the two teams accounted for seven errors, but it was a Davy Lopes misplay on a ground ball (his 5th of the year) in the fourth inning that cost the Dodgers four unearned runs and a possible victory.

Gary Carter (.248, 25 RBI) hits two more home runs, scoring three runs and driving in three more in a 6-4 victory over the Braves and has hit five home runs in the last two days. Carter hit three out of the park in yesterdays double-header against the Cubs and now leads the major leagues with 11. Pepe Frias (.237) also adds three hits for the Expos in the win.

Roy White (.397, 3 HR, 7 RBI) hits two of the Yankees four home runs in a 7-3 win over Oakland. White goes 4-for-4 and knocks in three RBI while scoring twice. Mickey Rivers (.374, 11 RBI) has three hits, including his second home run of the year and Don Gullett (4-3, 2.65 ERA) goes eight strong shutout innings giving up just four hits while striking out seven.

Injuries
- 3B Steve Ontiveros is expected to miss about 3-4 weeks with a bruised cheekbone.
- SP Greg Hannahs is expected to miss about 1-2 weeks with a damaged meniscus (knee).
- LF Pat Kelly is day-to-day for about 6 days with a strained Achilles tendon.
- SP Mike Flanagan is day-to-day for about 1-2 weeks with a strained back muscle.

Contract Signings
- SP Phil Niekro signed a 2-year extension worth a total of $1,548,000.
------------ He will earn $774,000 through 1979.

Wednesday, May 18
Oscar Gamble (.274, 7 HR, 17 RBI) leads off the bottom of the 13th with a towering shot off Marty Pattin (0-2, 7.94 ERA) to give the White Sox a 4-3 win over the Royals. Ken Brett (1.90 ERA) goes 11 innings, giving up 10 hits, and three earned runs and John Kucek (1-1, 4.85 ERA) gets the win with two scorless innings of relief. Ken's brother George Brett (.315) had three hits for the Royals including a triple off of his brother, but it was the combination of Gamble, Chet Lemon (.271), who had three doubles and Alan Bannister (.343), who had three hits for the Sox, that helped lead Chicago to victory.

Cardinals starter John Denny (1-4, 4.98 ERA) gets his first win of the season in a 9-5 St. Louis victory over the Astros. Denny throws eight innings, giving up just one run on five hits while fanning four. Keith Hernandez (.402) has three hits and pinch hitter Rick Bosetti (.438, 2 HR, 5 RBI) blasts a three-run shot in the ninth inning but the Cards need to hold on as Houston scores four runs in the bottom of the frame off of Buddy Schultz (7.43 ERA) thanks to a three RBI double by Cesar Cedeno (.312, 18 RBI).

Doyle Alexander (4-3, 4.70 ERA) didn't have his normally solid control, but he had enough to keep Detroit from hitting the ball as he holds the Tigers to two runs on three hits while walking three and giving Texas a 6-2 win. Mike Hargrove (.397) goes 3-for-3 and Dwight Evans (.343, 8 HR, 25 RBI) hits his seventh home run since coming over in a trade with the Red Sox.

Cincinnati LF George Foster (.303, 11 HR) crushes a 419-foot grand slam off of Pirates reliever Paul Mitchell (5.40 ERA) to give him a league leading 40 runs batted in and gives the Reds an 8-3 triumph. Mike Caldwell (6-3, 3.59 ERA) gives up two runs on seven hits in 7 1/3 innings to get the win.

Contract Signings
- RP Adrian Devine signed a 2-year extension worth a total of $128,575.
------------ He will earn $68,000 in 1978.
------------ He will earn $60,575 in 1979.

Thursday, May 19
Dan Meyer (.324) scores on a fielders choice by Bill Stien (.192) in the top of the ninth to give Seattle a 9-8 win over Oakland. Catcher Bob Stinson (.236) goes 4-for-4 and Julio Cruz (.322, 13 RBI) adds three hits, including his fourth homer for Seattle as every starter has at least one hit and 18 as a team. Oakland starter Vida Blue (3.96 ERA) lasts only 1 2/3 innings as errors by C Jeff Newman (4th) and 3B Wayne Gross (7th) lead to four unearned runs. Don Baylor (.276) has three hits for the A's in the losing effort.

The Twins win 5-4 over California by using an error by defensive replacement Mario Guerrero (1st error) to their advantage in the top of the ninth inning as Larry Hisle (.266) scores on a fly ball by Butch Wynegar (.291, 21 RBI) that would have been the third out had Guerrero not misplayed a grounder earlier in the inning. Lyman Bostock (.299, 3 HR, 25 RBI) has three hits and three RBI and Jeff Holly (1-2, 4.11 ERA) pitches a scoreless eighth for the win.

After Cubs CF Greg Gross ties the score in the top of the ninth on a wild pitch by Atlanta pitcher Mike Marshall (2-1, 1 BS, 3.14 ERA), Biff Pocoroba (.282) singles home Willie Montanez from second base off Bruce Sutter (1-2, 4.50 ERA) in the bottom of the frame to give the Braves a 3-2 win over Chicago. Phil Niekro (4.62 ERA) goes eight innings for Atlanta, giving up just three hits and one earned run while striking out six.

After 4 hours and 26 minutes of play, Ellis Valentine (.262, 4 HR, 19 RBI) sends the San Diego fans home happy with a two-run blast off Rick Sawyer (0-1, 4.15 ERA) in the bottom of the 14th inning to give the Expos a 7-5 win over San Diego. Mickey Stanley (.211, 9 RBI) has three hits for Montreal, including his third home run of the year while 1B Mike Ivie (.305) has three hits as well for the Padres.

Don Sutton (5.67 ERA) falls to 0-6 as two errors by Ron Cey (2nd & 3rd) and one by Davy Lopes (6th) lead to six unearned Pittsburgh runs en route to 10-2 Pirates victory. Ed Ott (.281, 2 HR, 10 RBI) hits the first two home runs of his career and drives in four runs while Dave Parker (.312, 10 HR, 33 RBI) collects three RBI with his three hits for Pittsburgh. Pirates starter Jerry Reuss (5-1, 2.59 ERA) did his part, shutting down the Dodgers on just three hits and two earned runs in eight innings of work.

Steve Carlton (4-3, 3.26 ERA) and two relievers give up just two hits to the Astros in Philadelphia's 2-0 win. Carlton only goes six innings and 93 pitches, giving up just a single to pitcher J.R. Richard before being replaced with Warren Brusstar. Richard (2-4, 4.41 ERA) pitched a complete game, giving up 10 hits and two earned runs while striking out 10.

The hitting streak of Jack Clark (.353, 5 HR, 14 RBI), now standing at 34 games, is put on hold as he fractures his hand in a collision at second base with Mike Phillips while breaking up a double play attempt in the fifth inning. Clark had continued his streak earlier that inning by bunting for a single off Mets pitcher Jon Matlack. Word is the Giants will recall 2B Rob Andrews and place Clark on the 15-day DL. The Giants would go on to win the game 5-2.

Injuries
- MR Donnie Moore is expected to miss about a week with a strep throat.
- RF Jack Clark is expected to miss about 1-2 weeks with a fractured hand.

Contract Signings
- SP Tommy John signed a 4-year extension worth a total of $8,784,000.
------------ He will earn $2,196,000 through 1981.

Friday, May 20
Milwaukee's Bob McClure (2-3, 2 BS, 1.96 ERA) goes nuclear again as he walks Ted Cox in the bottom of the ninth then gives up three consecutive singles to Butch Hobson (.200), Bernie Carbo (.287) and Rick Burleson (.232) to give Boston the win, 6-5. The win comes at a cost for the Red Sox however as Carl Yastrzemski (.287, 8 HR, 25 RBI) suffered a strained groin in the fifth inning and is expected to miss 2-3 weeks. The Brewers had taken the lead in the top of the inning when Cecil Cooper (.338, 23 RBI) hit his seventh home run of the year - also his fourth hit of the game.

White Sox starter Ken Kravec (2.89 ERA) leaves the game after the second inning and by the end of Chicago's 5-4 loss to Detroit, the trainers have confirmed the Kravec will miss the next four weeks with a hyperextended elbow. Mark Fidrych (5-3, 3.26 ERA) goes eight innings, giving up nine hits and striking out six while Tiger CF Ron LeFlore goes 4-for-4 (.277, 9 RBI) in the Detroit win.

Doug Rau (3-5, 5.31 ERA) comes to the Dodgers rescue and helps break LA's six-game losing streak with a 3-0 shutout win over Pittsburgh. Rau gives up five hits and strikes out five while 1B Steve Garvey (.278) has three of the Dodgers seven hits to keep LA from falling farther back in the NL West race.

Gary Templeton (.288, 12 RBI) leads the Cardinals 22-hit assault with a 6-for-6 effort of his own as St. Louis destroys San Francisco 19-7 at Busch Stadium. Ted Simmons (.380, 10 HR, 37 RBI), Bake McBride (.373) and Ken Reitz (.286) all have three hits for the Cards and Simmons adds two home runs, seven RBI and scores four times as every starter in the St, Louis lineup has one hit and scored at least one run. Eric Rasmussen (6-2, 4.10 ERA) cruises to the easy victory even though he gives up six earned runs in six innings.

Hal McRae hits a sacrifice fly to tie the game and Tom Poquette (.293, 9 RBI) gets his fourth hit of the game, an RBI single all off closer Jim Kern (0-3, 2 BS, 4.76 ERA) in the bottom of the ninth inning to score an 8-7 win over the Indians. Al Cowens (.299) has three hits, including two doubles for the Royals while Paul Dade (.280) has three singles for the Tribe.

Injuries
- 1B Carl Yastrzemski is expected to miss about 2-3 weeks with a strained groin.
- SP Ken Kravec is expected to miss about 4 weeks with a hyperextended elbow.
- 1B Jerry Tabb is expected to about 2 weeks with a concussion.

Saturday, May 21
Backup catcher Joe Ferguson (.291, 2 HR, 10 RBI) hit the jackpot when the Astros resigned him at $6,280,000 over 4 years at $1,570,000 for the first three years and a player option for the fourth. Ferguson has a career average of .240 and as long as Cliff Johnson is ahead of him, I don't see him earning this much. Of course maybe Johnson is trade bait now.

The Astros also resigned SP Joe Niekro (6-1, 3.70 ERA) for 1 more year worth $239,000.

Milt Wilcox (5-4, 2.21 ERA) and Silvio Martinez (0-1, 2.00 ERA) both pitch complete games, but it is Wilcox who comes away with the win, pitching a three-hit shutout to beat Chicago 2-0. Wilcox would strikeout four and walked five while earning his fifth win of the year. Martinez pitched well, scattering seven hits and only one walk, but a key two-out two RBI double from Steve Kemp (.276, 14 RBI) would be the deciding factor.

Reggie Jackson (.298, 4 HR, 28 RBI) hits a three-run shot off of Jim Palmer (3-6, 3.88 ERA) in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Yankees an eventual 5-4 win over Baltimore. The win gives Ron Guidry (6-1, 2.61 ERA) his sixth win of the season while giving Palmer his sixth loss. Mickey Rivers (.390) adds three hits for New York in the win.

Phil Garner (.276, 13 RBI) triples home Omar Moreno in the bottom of the 13th inning off Dennis Lewallyn (2-2, 2.55 ERA) to beat the Dodgers 4-3. It is Garner's fifth triple of the year and ties him for the league lead. Terry Forster (2-0, 2.79 ERA) gets the win in relief.

After Ellis Valentine (.258, 5 HR, 21 RBI) hits a two-run blast off of Randy Jones (3.81 ERA) in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the score at two, Dave Winfield (.272, 9 HR, 23 RBI) sends a two-run rocket to left field off Bill Atkinson (0-2, 3.71 ERA) in the top of the 14th to lead San Diego to a 4-2 win over Montreal. Jones would also hit the first home run of his career in the third inning against Hal Dues. Paul Siebert (1-0, 4.26 ERA) pitches three scoreless innings in relief for the win.

RF Champ Summers (.200, 3 HR, 5 RBI), replacing the injured Ken Griffey, hits two solo home runs and scores three runs to lead Cincinnati to a 9-1 crushing of the Mets. Pat Zachry (3-1, 2.70 ERA) goes eight innings in the win, giving up just four hits and striking out five while allowing one earned run.

Trades
Trade between Cleveland and St. Louis :
Cleveland gets:
MR Clay Carroll (36) - $607,950 / 2
_ STL: 1-1 / 8.10 ERA / 13 G / 13.1 IP / 12 ER / 4 BB / 6 K / 1.73 WHIP
C Riley Smith (26) - A

St. Louis gets :
2B Duane Kuiper (26) - $68,310 / 1
_ CLE: .344 / 64 AB / 10 R / 0 HR / 5 RBI / .425 OBP / .375 SLG

It looks as if Cleveland is satified enough with Bobby Grich as the new 2B as they practically gave Kuiper to the Cardinals. I've said it before that Grich may be the 2B of the future for the Tribe, but Kuiper had been hitting the ball so well before his injury a few weeks ago. I find the timing of this trade odd as I felt they could have waited to make a decision. Apparently Grich had done enough to win the job while Kuiper was on the DL, because Kuiper had just been activated when this trade happened. On some side notes, St. Louis optioned 2B Ken Oberkfell to AAA Chesapeake to make room for Kuiper and Alfredo Griffin has been promoted to take the backup role behind Grich.

Edge: At this very moment, it is St. Louis. Grich just hasn't shown enough while Kuiper was hurt to make this trade viable to me. I have no crystal ball to see into the future, but it seems Cleveland gave up to fast on Kuiper.

Injuries
- 1B Ivan DeJesus is day-to-day for about 5 days with a finger blister.

Contract Signings
- C Joe Ferguson signed a 4-year extension worth a total of $6,280,000.
------------ He will earn $1,570,000 through 1980.
------------ There is a player option for $1,570,000 for 1981.
- SP Joe Niekro signed a 1-year extension worth a total of $239,000.

This Day In Baseball History

May 21, 1930 - Babe Ruth hits three consecutive home runs in the first game of a doubleheader against the A's, then batting against Jack Quinn in the 9th, Ruth decides to hit right handed. After two strikes, he switches to lefty but strikes out. This is the first of two career 3-homer games for the Babe. Max Bishop draws five walks for the 2nd time in his career (he is the only player to do this twice), and Jimmie Foxx homers to help the A's to a 15 - 7 victory. Ruth is homerless in the 2nd game, a 4 - 1 Yankee loss, but Bishop has three more walks. Bishop will also walk eight times in a doubleheader in 1934, the only player to collect more than six walks in an afternoon.

May 21, 1957 - Boston baseball writers reaffirm their decision to bar women from the press box and refuse to allow Doris O'Donnell, a Cleveland feature writer traveling with the Indians, to sit in the Fenway Park press area.
